CHANGES TO YOUR BODY DURING PREGNANCY

During pregnancy, the hormonal changes that occur can cause a loosening of the ligaments around the spine and pelvis. This causes pressure on the lower back, a change in posture and a subsequent weakening of the abdominal muscles. The loosening of ligaments also causes joint instability in the back, pelvis and legs which in turn, leads to excessive mobility. In combination, this often leads to a worsening of your posture.

As the pregnancy progresses

The abdomen protrudes and gravity and hormonal changes increase and continue to weaken and relax the muscles of the lower back and stomach.

There is a change in your weight distribution, increasing the stress on spinal and pelvic muscles.

The increased lumbar curve as well as the growing weight of the baby places great stress on the lower back muscles and the spine.

Common problems during pregnancy

  • Lower back pain which can radiate into the buttocks and down to the knees.
  • Sciatica: pain usually on one side which can extends to the foot.
  • Pelvic floor weakens which intern can lead to incontinence
  • Thoracic pain especially around the shoulder blade
